Seems like half the high-achieving dudes out here are really only in it so they can abuse women with less scrutiny

I checked out the 'Vampire Chronicles' sub reddit and...

My god. So many purist book fans hating on the show because they don't like that Louis is black.

People don't outright say it, but the amount of people disliking the show because it's "too woke" and bc "it's afraid to go there" are using that as an excuse for their racism. They would rather Louis be exactly like the book and be a white plantation owner with slaves, just because it's "accurate to the books"??? Nothing is worth that and no one needs to see it.

And they try to hide behind their "loyalty to anne rice" and the books. No one wants to see Anne Rice's Louis on television in 2022, and more importantly, no one NEEDS to see it. We saw it with Brad Pitt (which was so uninspired) and that character does absolutely nothing for anyone as it was. Jacob Anderson's Louis, on the other hand, has not only reinvented but revived the character of Louis. They made him sympathetic, likeable, relatable, and intriguing — all things the original character lacked. Louis is a black, gay vampire in the 1900's who is ambitious, sensitive, monstrous, devastatingly human, compassionate, cruel, and loving.

The problems he faces as both a black man and a vampire are things that people still face to this day. Jacob has breathed life into the character of Louis and made him timeless. I am sick of book fans using book accuracy as a subterfuge for their thinly-veiled racism.

This is a quote by Jacob Anderson in an interview after being asked about the show being "woke:"

Jacob Anderson: I think that what is happening is that we’re being representative of the world we live in now, and of the world we lived in then. The show is set in 1910. Louis and Claudia’s race is reflective of the demographic of New Orleans at that time, so it’s not revisionist. It makes sense. I’m loath to feel like I need to justify it to anybody that is resistant to that, but in our case, certainly that is it.

Top Comment: I’m something of a purist, more so when it comes to Lestat, but it’s very clear the writers wanted to explore vampires in New Orleans as a metaphor for racial tension and making Louis Black achieved that quite effectively. People are just afraid of having to face that discomfort, especially when it comes to internalized racism.

Is anyone else drastically disappointed with the show?

Main Post:

First of all, I don't intend to diminish people's enjoyment of the show. I'm so happy that there are those enjoying and loving new fresh takes on these characters. It introduces new takes, it keeps fandoms alive, and it hopefully leads those new fans to the rest of the catalog of wonderful story telling of these characters.

I see so much positivity about the show, which is amazing. But there is, even beyond surface level, so much difference between what I've read and loved and the show that's it's barely recognisable. I'm not someone apposed to change in things, I'm a huge star trek fan, and like my mamma named me after a character she loved (Lestat), I named my son Clark. I still loved the OG star trek series, I also loved the 09 Star Trek.

I find that Louis isn't Louis, the fundamentals of what made him him aren't there. The time line of events are out, but for what seems like no other reason than they are.

The saving grace here is Lestat is close, I feel the actor has done well with what is a bad hand.

I don't hope to change peoples mind, I absolutely want you to enjoy the show, I hope you do. I was just hoping for an somewhat accurate account of the book, maybe told in a way that the time allowance of a series allows over a movie. And what I got was, and I hate the wording, a very poorly done version based on "woke" culture that changed the fundamentals of the story teller character, and spoon fed modern agendas into it.

Obviously just my two cents on it. I'm going to carry on watching in the hopes I enjoy the show. I'm very happy they made it, even as is, as it's brilliant for the fan base. Please don't change your mind on the show because of my words, please please please find pleasure in things you just enjoy, and don't let the words of an estranged person on the internet change your mind, my ramblings hold no power. My opinion doesn't hold more wait than yours. Love what you love, and enjoy what you enjoy.

Top Comment: Claudia being sexually assaulted and Lestat beating Louis like that left a bad taste in my mouth. I hate the timeline, I hate a lot of things about it. I hate this versions Daniel. I really wanted to like it but I’m struggling

Lestat (Sam Reid) + Louis (Jacob Anderson) = Absolute Perfection

Main Post:

Am I right? I don't think I've been this enamored with a pairing since Michael and Nikita from the show La Femme Nikita in the 90s. I look at Lestat (Sam Reid) and Louis (Jacob Anderson) and I don't think "GAY". I think "human" which is ironic, given the subject matter of blood and sucking hehe.

Damn. They work so well off of each other and you can see real love, care, and even bromance in their interviews. Without fail, I see them stare at each other with such respect and mirror each other in interviews: legs crossed, with open and intimate body language. The casting team truly outdid themselves.

KUDOS!

Sam and Jacob were BORN to be our "non-discriminating" Brat Prince and Moral Significant Other, only with a bit more BITE!

WE ACCEPT THEM: ONE OF US, ONE OF US ONE OF US. WE ACCEPT THEM: ONE OF US!

Top Comment: They simply feel like a "proper" couple in the show and it doesn't matter that they're both men, no matter how many people call it "woke". The interviews are indeed crazy, I even thought that they were maybe a real life couple because of the constant looking at each other (more coming from Sam though, which is funny because it's been the same in the show so far) and the body language but then I read that Jacob is married with a small child. Sam is just something else, I watched about 20 minutes of "Lambs of God" and didn't see too many similarities but in the IwtV interviews I watched he feels like he's partially got Lestat's character. It looks like we have to add another actor to the list of people who simply are their character!

Problem with changes

Main Post:

Hello!

I’m an adult with ASD, and like many of you, I read the Vampire Chronicles as a teenager. (Vittorio is my favorite character Anne wrote )

It worries me about to changes to the plot and characters this show chose to go with. I even had problems with the changes the original movie made and I’m worried to death that I’m being prejudice about race swapping of characters, or dismissive of Louis’ new lot.

Does anyone else feel the same way? I asked my sister if I’m racist for some of the changes bothering me and she doesn’t seem to think so.

Should I just stick with the Chronicles and skip the new show? Or should I give it a chance?

Top Comment:

Unless you dislike the changes because you hate people of that race or something, it's not racist. It's perfectly fine to dislike changes made to the source material.

I was kind of excited they were making Louis black because there is a history of French black slaveowners in this country that hasn't really been explored. It would be an interesting dynamic, kind of the logic of being black but being ok with slavery.

Then apparently, instead of doing that they're changing him into like...a pimp who runs a brothel. Not quite the progressive casting they thought it was.
